What is Alleyway Theatre Incorporated? Alleyway Theatre Incorporated is a family of four subsidiary companies including Alleyway Theatre (producing new plays in Buffalo's Theatre District), Pandora's Box Theatre Company (our women's company), KidsHowCo (our children's theatre company), and Upper West Arts Center (our multi-use, community based arts center). This configuration of theatre companies represents our new way of looking at collaboration in the world of the arts. The diversity within this one corporate framework which exists among our subsidiaries means access and service to the widest possible segment of the community. At the same time, the administrative connection among the subsidiaries offers the greatest possible opportunity for efficient and cost effective operation. Finally, strength drawn from economic benefits of this arrangement allows for the artistic independence of our producing companies so that some of Western New York's most distinctive artistic visions will continue to thrive. The corporate offices are at 1 Curtain Up Alley, Buffalo, NY 14202. Neal Radice is Founder and Executive Director. Upper West Arts Center was purchased by the corporation in October, 1998. Will Alleyway Theatre move from downtown? No. Upper West Arts Center is an independent arm of the corporation and its many wonderful facilities are intended primarily for use by Western New York's artists, arts organizations, community organizations, and private individuals. The only programming created by the corporation which will happen at the Arts Center is our annual production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL and performances by our women's company, Pandora's Box Theatre Company. Downtown, the Buffalo Police vacated the Alleyway building in summer, 2000 and the corporation began occupying all of the space in the 33,000 sq. ft. former bus depot. Our 25 year lease with the City of Buffalo is already in place and renovations to our Theatre District home were completed in September, 2005. Does Buffalo really need another theatre? The shortage of affordable, high quality arts space in Buffalo has been evident for the last two decades. A number of surveys during that time, and an assessment in 1995 by Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern, Inc. of Roanoke, Virginia pointed to the critical need which Upper West Arts Center will finally satisfy. Though our corporate name may mislead, it is incorrect to think of this as a theatre development project. The need which Upper West Arts Center will satisfying goes far beyond any one arts discipline. This will be the area's first true arts center providing offices, rehearsal halls, classrooms, meeting rooms, performance spaces and exhibit spaces to every type of artist and cultural organization. The companies and individual artists having already expressed interest represent music, dance, theatre, opera, photography, film, painting, sculpture, print-making, and literary performance. Further, the center will host meetings of community organizations and block clubs. What about parking? Parking is an issue which is being dealt with through the assistance of members of the neighborhood. An independent parking committee has been created and it is looking into ways to ease any parking stress which may arise from the successful operation of Upper West Arts Center. Remedies being pursued include: * Development of shuttles to Elmwood restaurants etcetera. * Development of valet parking to lots in the perimeter of the Upper West Arts Center area. What many may not realize, is that the location of Upper West Arts Center may itself be a partial answer to questions about parking. As every arts organization database will verify, the overwhelming majority of arts lovers within the city limits, live walking distance from Upper West Arts Center. Thus, it is likely that much of the Upper West Arts Center audience will walk and not drive to performances, workshops, meetings, and exhibits. How will the center pay for itself? Will it be government supported? Operated by Alleyway Theatre Incorporated, Upper West Arts Center will be more than self sustaining. It is anticipated that the Center will serve as many as two dozen arts organizations and audiences of up to 50,000 each year. This, combined with all the other programs of the corporation will result in an unprecedented period of growth, and fiscal independence. The work of the not-for-profit corporation, however, will always continue to be focused on cultural rather than commercial programming and enterprises. Therefore, a partial reliance on support from public funding sources will continue as it has for the corporation's first twenty five years. Is the center intended for local artists? Or only national acts? The schedule at Upper West Arts Center will be determined based on the following priorities: 1. Accommodate A CHRISTMAS CAROL in the concert hall. 2. Accommodate resident companies; i.e. local organizations which elect to maintain an ongoing presence using offices, studios, galleries, rehearsal halls, classrooms, and performance spaces. 3. Accommodate all other local artists and arts organizations on a first-come-first-serve basis. 4. Remaining season schedule filled in by Upper West Arts Center management booking other local, regional, national, and international programs. How soon will you open? Rather than predict a date, and, like so many recent projects in Buffalo, fall victim to disheartening delays, we are, instead, projecting based on a monetary goal: we need an additional $500,000 to complete phase I. Donations can even be made online!
